Ritual Casting

Ritual casting allows certain spellcasters to cast spells without expending spell slots by taking extra time. This is one of the most valuable features for conserving resources.

What Is Ritual Casting?

Ritual casting lets you cast a spell with the "ritual" tag without using a spell slot. The tradeoff is time - ritual casting takes 10 minutes longer than normal.

Key Benefits:

  • Save spell slots for combat
  • Cast utility spells freely out of combat
  • Access spells you haven't prepared (wizard only!)
  • Perfect for exploration and roleplay situations

The Wizard's Unique Advantage:

  • Most ritual casters must have the spell prepared
  • Wizards can ritual cast ANY ritual spell in their spellbook
  • This makes wizards the best ritual casters in the game
  • Collect ritual spells even if you'd never prepare them!

How Ritual Casting Works

Time Required:

  • Add 10 minutes to the normal casting time
  • Detect Magic: Action (6 seconds) becomes 10 minutes and 6 seconds
  • Most rituals are already 1 minute or 10 minutes base

What You Need:

  • The spell must have the "ritual" tag
  • Wizards: The spell must be in your spellbook
  • Other casters: The spell must be prepared
  • You must still provide any material components
  • Concentration is NOT required during the ritual

What Doesn't Change:

  • Range, targets, and effects work normally
  • Duration works normally
  • Component requirements (V, S, M) remain the same

Best Ritual Spells

Which Classes Can Ritual Cast?

Natural Ritual Casters:

  • Wizard: Any ritual in spellbook (no preparation needed!)
  • Cleric: Any prepared ritual
  • Druid: Any prepared ritual
  • Bard: Any known ritual

Feat Access:
