  • A restrained creature's speed becomes 0, and it can't benefit from any bonus to its speed.
  • Attack rolls against the creature have advantage.
  • The creature's attack rolls have disadvantage.

Common Sources

Entangle spell, Web spell, Ensnaring Strike, Net weapon, grappling vines, and many monster abilities (Roper's tendrils, Giant Spider's web).

Key Interactions

  • Restrained is stronger than grappled — it adds advantage on attacks against the creature and disadvantage on their attacks and Dex saves.

  • Freedom of Movement makes you immune to being restrained.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake
Confusing restrained with grappled — restrained is significantly more punishing
Common Mistake
Forgetting disadvantage on Dex saves — this makes AoE spells more dangerous
