Frightened Condition 5e
A frightened creature has disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls while it can see the source of its fear.
Effect
- A frightened creature has disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls while the source of its fear is within line of sight.
- The creature can't willingly move closer to the source of its fear.
Common Sources
Spells like Fear, Cause Fear, and Phantasmal Killer. Dragon's Frightful Presence, the Conquest Paladin's Conquering Presence, and the Berserker Barbarian's Intimidating Presence.
Key Interactions
- The disadvantage only applies while the source is in line of sight — break line of sight to fight normally.
- The creature CAN move away from or laterally to the source, just not closer.
- Immunity to the frightened condition (like Berserker's Mindless Rage) prevents all effects.
- Devotion Paladin's Aura of Courage makes nearby allies immune.
Common Mistakes
Common Mistake
Applying disadvantage even when the creature can't see the source of fear — it only applies while in line of sight
Common Mistake
Thinking frightened means the creature must flee — it just can't move closer
Common Mistake
Forgetting the creature can still attack, just with disadvantage
