Key Abilities

AbilityDescription
Iron ScentThe rust monster can pinpoint the location of ferrous metal within 30 feet of it by smell.
Rust MetalAny nonmagical weapon made of metal that hits the rust monster corrodes. After dealing damage, the weapon takes a permanent and cumulative −1 penalty to damage rolls. If its penalty drops to −5, the weapon is destroyed.
AntennaeThe rust monster corrodes a nonmagical ferrous metal object it touches. If it's a weapon, it takes a −1 penalty. If it's armor, it takes a −1 penalty to AC. If the object's penalty reduces it to useless, it's destroyed.

How to Run This Monster

Rust monsters aren't aggressive — they're hungry for metal. They detect ferrous metal with Iron Scent and rush toward the nearest source. They prefer to touch metal objects with their antennae rather than fight. They'll ignore creatures who drop their metal equipment and flee from fire.

Encounter Ideas

The rust monster is one of D&D's most feared low-CR creatures because it destroys equipment. The terror comes from watching a fighter's plate armor dissolve, not from damage. Use them in dungeon corridors where retreat is difficult. Smart parties will strip off metal gear or use non-metal weapons.

Loot
Rust monster antennae can be harvested (25 gp each) and used to create rust-dissolving potions. Their lairs are littered with iron oxide dust — the remains of their meals.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake
Having rust monsters destroy magic items — they only affect nonmagical metal
Common Mistake
Making them aggressive fighters — they want metal, not combat
Common Mistake
Not giving players warning signs (corroded metal in the dungeon, iron oxide dust)

Give players time to realize what's happening and adapt tactics
