Key Abilities
| Ability | Description |
|---|---|
| Tentacle | Melee weapon attack, +17 to hit, reach 30 ft. 3d6+10 bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 18). The kraken has ten tentacles, each of which can grapple one target. |
| Lightning Storm | The kraken magically creates three bolts of lightning, each targeting a creature within 120 ft. Each must make a DC 23 Dexterity save, taking 4d10 lightning damage on a failure. |
| Legendary Actions (3/round) | Tentacle Attack or Fling (flings a grappled creature up to 60 ft.), Lightning Storm (costs 2), or Ink Cloud (costs 3, 60-foot radius cloud in water). |
How to Run This Monster
The kraken fights from the water, using its 30-foot tentacle reach to grab creatures off ships and drag them under. It uses Lightning Storm to hit targets it can't reach with tentacles. It capsizes ships by grappling and pulling them under. On its turn, it multiattacks with bite and tentacles while keeping targets grappled.
Encounter Ideas
A kraken encounter should feel like a natural disaster. Set it during a storm at sea. The party must fight while their ship is being destroyed around them. Give them objectives beyond 'kill the kraken' — rescue drowning sailors, keep the ship afloat, reach a magical artifact that can banish it.
Loot
Krakens guard deep-sea treasure hordes: 50,000+ gp in sunken ships, legendary magic items, and artifacts from ancient civilizations. A kraken's beak and tentacles are worth thousands to alchemists.
Common Mistakes
Common Mistake
Trying to run a kraken fight on land — it needs water
Common Mistake
Forgetting the kraken has TEN tentacles that can each grapple separately
Common Mistake
Not using the environment — storms, waves, sinking ships
DM Tips

A kraken is a campaign-level threat, not a random encounter
DM Tip
Use the kraken's Intelligence (22) — it plans, negotiates, and plots
