+1 Shield

A +1 shield is a magically enhanced defensive implement that provides even greater protection than a mundane shield. The shield might be adorned with glowing runes, made from enchanted materials, or blessed by divine magic. When wielded, the shield seems to anticipate attacks, positioning itself perfectly to deflect blows. While all shields provide a +2 bonus to AC, a +1 shield increases this to +3 total bonus (+2 base + 1 magical enhancement), representing a significant defensive improvement.

How It Works

While holding this shield, you have a +3 bonus to AC. This is in addition to the shield's normal bonus to AC (+2), for a total of +3 AC. The shield works against all attacks and grants its bonus as long as you're wielding it. You must be proficient with shields to gain this benefit. Donning or doffing this shield takes an action, just like a normal shield. The shield occupies one hand and prevents the use of two-handed weapons or two-weapon fighting.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake
Calculating the bonus as +1 instead of +3 (it's +2 from normal shield + 1 magical = +3 total)
Common Mistake
Thinking the +1 shield requires attunement (it doesn't)
Common Mistake
Forgetting that donning or doffing the shield still requires an action
Common Mistake
Not realizing you still need shield proficiency to use this effectively
Common Mistake
Assuming you can use two-handed weapons while benefiting from the shield
