Half Plate

Half plate armor consists of shaped metal plates that cover most of the wearer's body, but leaves the legs protected only by greaves and the arms by vambraces. This medium armor represents a balance between the mobility of light armor and the protection of heavy armor. The suit includes gauntlets. Half plate is the best medium armor available, offering AC 15 + Dexterity modifier (max 2). It's favored by clerics, druids (if metal is allowed), rangers, and other characters who want substantial protection while maintaining some Dexterity benefit.

Mechanics

Armor Class: 15 + Dexterity modifier (maximum +2). Medium armor lets you add your Dexterity modifier, up to a maximum of +2, to your AC. You can don half plate in 5 minutes and doff it in 1 minute. Donning with help reduces time by half. No Strength requirement. Stealth Disadvantage: You have disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks while wearing this armor. Wearing armor without proficiency imposes disadvantage on ability checks, saving throws, and attack rolls involving Strength or Dexterity, and prevents spellcasting.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistake
Forgetting the +2 maximum on Dexterity modifier (14 Dex gives +2, 16+ Dex also gives only +2)
Common Mistake
Not applying stealth disadvantage in all situations
Common Mistake
Thinking the 750 gp cost makes this early-game armor (it's usually mid-level)
Common Mistake
Not realizing characters with 16+ Dexterity get the same AC from breastplate (which has no stealth disadvantage)
Common Mistake
Assuming half plate requires a Strength score (it doesn't, unlike heavy armor)

DM Tips

DM Tip
Half plate is the best armor for medium armor users willing to accept stealth disadvantage
DM Tip
Characters with 14 Dexterity get AC 17 from half plate (same as splint armor)
DM Tip
The 750 gp cost is expensive - typically a level 5-8 upgrade
DM Tip
Breastplate (AC 14 + Dex max 2) has no stealth disadvantage and costs 400 gp - often better choice
DM Tip
Perfect for clerics who want maximum AC without heavy armor proficiency
DM Tip
The 40 lb weight is substantial but manageable
DM Tip
Consider half plate as loot from fallen knights or elite guards
DM Tip
The stealth disadvantage matters less for front-line characters who rarely sneak
DM Tip
NPCs in half plate are professional soldiers or experienced adventurers
