Observant

Complete guide to the Observant feat in D&D 5e. Boost your Perception and Investigation, read lips, and never miss hidden details with this half-feat.

Benefit

You increase your Intelligence or Wisdom by 1 and gain a massive +5 bonus to passive Perception and Investigation, plus the ability to read lips.

Mechanics

Observant is a half-feat that dramatically improves your awareness: **Ability Score Increase:** Increase your Intelligence or Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20. **+5 Passive Perception and Investigation:** Your passive Wisdom (Perception) and passive Intelligence (Investigation) scores each increase by 5. **Read Lips:** If you can see a creature's mouth while it is speaking a language you understand, you can interpret what it's saying by reading its lips. **Important Details:** - +5 passive scores is huge - you'll notice almost everything - Passive scores are used when you're not actively searching - Lip reading works at any distance you can see clearly - Works best with odd WIS or INT scores (13→14 for better modifier) - DMs use passive Perception to determine what you notice automatically

Synergies

  • *Rogue/Ranger builds - Excellent for scouts and investigators
  • *Inquisitive Rogue - Stack with Eye for Detail for incredible investigation
  • *Perception expertise - 20+ passive Perception at mid-levels
  • *Dungeon Delver feat - Find traps and hidden doors constantly
  • *Alert feat - Never surprised and always notice threats
  • *Wisdom-based classes - Clerics, Druids, Rangers benefit from WIS increase
